Mazda Confirms New CX-70 Set for Jan 30 Global Debut

Mazda is set to unveil its latest SUV model later this month, dubbed the CX-70
Mazda is ushering in the new year by launching a brand-new product under its growing CX SUV lineup. Dubbed the CX-70, this two-row SUV is slated to make its global debut in North American markets, which is due to take place on Jan 30.
Final confirmation of the CX-70’s launch date was made officially by Mazda Canada via its official web page, where the exact date and time for its timely debut are also on display. Beyond that, no details were shared about the new model on both its Canadian and Japanese websites, though a prior presentation to investors revealed some interesting bits about this upcoming SUV model.

As revealed by Mazda during its previous investors' presentation, the CX-70 will reportedly be a sportier, two-row version of the marque's current flagship SUV model, the CX-90
As pointed out by CarScoops, Mazda did reveal during its previous presentation that the CX-70 will essentially be a two-row version of the marque’s current, three-row flagship SUV, the CX-90. With the third-row seat removed, we can expect the CX-70 to boast a sportier stance compared to the CX-90, just like how the GLE Coupe differs from the standard GLE.

Mazda CX-90 three-row flagship SUV
While Mazda has yet to reveal the extent of the CX-70’s similarities with the CX-90, it is safe to bet that the new SUV model will get the same mild-hybrid (MHEV) powertrain setup as said flagship SUV. Consisting of a 3.3-litre inline-six turbocharged e-Skyactiv G mill plus a 48-volt MHEV system, this setup delivers 280 HP and 450 NM for the base-spec CX-90, while the top-spec model gets a higher output of 340 HP and 500 NM.

Besides MHEV, the CX-90 also comes with a plug-in hybrid variant
Mild hybrids aside, the American-spec CX-90 also comes with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, which sees a 2.5-litre 4-cyl nat-asp Skyactiv-G mill working in tandem with an electric motor plus a 17.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack to deliver a total system output of 323 HP and 500 NM. Due to its bulkier facade and heftier mass, the CX-90 PHEV boasts a maximum EV range of only 42 KM – which is less than the CX-60 PHEV's claimed 60 KM range, despite using the same battery pack.
We can expect to learn more about the upcoming Mazda CX-70 once we get closer to its eventual global debut date, which is set to commence later on Jan 30.
