Proton Marks Fifth Straight Year Of Growth With 154,611 Cars Sold In 2023
The carmaker concluded the year with 154,611 units sold, 9.3% more than the 141,432 units sold in 2022. In December alone, the national carmaker sold 12,711 units.
"Factors such as the fulfilment of orders for tax free cars up till the end of March no doubt fuelled the volume increase in the first quarter of the year, but it was also an active year for car launches with minimal disruptions caused by parts shortages," said Proton CEO Li Chunrong in a statement.
He also stated that the carmaker is confident in maintaining its momentum, which will be aided by the introduction of the Proton S70.
Since December 2018, the company's total sales have increased by more than 200,000 units due to the introduction of its three-SUV lineup, which includes the Proton X50, Proton X70, and Proton X90.
However, it was the rebound in demand for the PIES models (Persona, Iriz, Exora, and Saga) that powered sales growth in the previous year.
With an astounding 70,184 units sold, the Proton Saga was the best-selling model both at the beginning and the end of the year. This was its best performance since 2012, and it placed it as the fourth best-selling car in Malaysia for 2023.
"We recognize the journey we've undertaken thus far, and beyond delivering quality vehicles, we understand the significance of providing pride of ownership with owners
"Our dedication to improving after-sales service and parts has played a crucial role in reaching this milestone as Proton remains steadfast in its commitment to continuous improvement and resolute in meeting and surpassing the expectations of our customers,” said Proton Edar CEO and Proton deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah.
The year-over-year increase in volume was an impressive 25.6%, driven primarily by first-time car buyers seeking a reliable, safe, and enjoyable vehicle to drive. Unsurprisingly, Proton stated that the Proton Persona was the best-performing model in their range.
Proton reported that sales of the B-segment sedan rebounded by 48.9% to 24,362 units, placing the model second in its class, following significant delays caused by chip shortages in 2022.
The chip problem that plagued the B-segment hatchback sister car, the Proton Iriz, last year also had an impact on it. Despite this, sales of the car increased by 33.8 percent to 7,639 units in 2023.
In its final year of production, the Proton Exora saw a 4.6 percent increase in sales, finishing the year with 4,473 units sold and demonstrating that demand among target market buyers remains strong. With over 194,000 units sold to date, The Exora is touted as the most successful C-segment MPV in Malaysian history.
The Proton X50 and Proton X90 concluded the year as the top models in their respective markets. The Proton X50 continues to enjoy strong demand even after more than 100,000 units have been produced and sold; in 2023, 31,829 units were sold in Malaysia and export markets.
Meanwhile, the Proton X90, which debuted on May 7, 2023, remains the market leader in the D-segment SUV segment, having sold 4,815 units by year's end.
With 11,200 sold, the Proton X70 was the second most well-liked SUV in the C-segment in 2023.
With regard to the Proton S70, customer deliveries are scheduled to start in 2024, and the model has already received over 5,000 reservations; Proton anticipates that the S70 will make a significant contribution to sales this year.
