FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp., earlier this week launched its first cross-border delivery trial from Malaysia to Singapore with an electric van. This endeavour underscores FedEx's ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and advancing sustainable logistics practices.

The journey will be undertaken using a 'Maxus eDeliver 7' from FedEx Shah Alam to a FedEx Changi Airport in Singapore, spanning a total distance of 406 kilometres. This trip, if performed using a conventional diesel van, sees an estimated CO2 exhaust emission amounting to approximately 100 kilograms.

This trial serves as an initial assessment of operational feasibility for future cross-border pick-up and delivery operations, plus possible enhancement to the fleet's efficiency and customer service.

Kawal Preet, President of the Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa region at FedEx, emphasised the importance of strategic thinking in reducing emissions across all ground operations, not solely limited to last-mile delivery.

He also added that, "This cross-border trial serves as a proof of concept, informing and advancing our fleet electrification program in the region, aligning with our customers' demand for sustainable time-definite delivery."

This trial represents a significant milestone for FedEx as it progresses towards its goal of transitioning its entire global pickup and delivery fleet to zero-emission electric vehicles by 2040, following a phased approach.

Back In May 2023, FedEx introduced two EVs to its Malaysian fleet for parcel pick-up and delivery operations within the Klang Valley. FedEx Express has established a target of operating an all-electric global pickup and delivery (PUD) fleet by 2040, which would need the conversion of 50% of its PUD vehicle fleet to electric by 2025 and 100% by 2030.

Tien Long Woon, Managing Director of FedEx Express Malaysia, hailed the cross-border endeavour with a zero-tailpipe emissions vehicle as a groundbreaking move towards redefining industry standards.

Furthermore, FedEx has launched FedEx Sustainability Insights, a cloud-based carbon emissions reporting tool, enabling Malaysian customers to access historical emissions data on their shipments within the FedEx network.
