Honda NSX Set For Revival As An EV Sportscar?
At the recent CES 2024 expo, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe tipped that the NSX could return as an all-electric halo EV sportscar.
At the recent Consumer Electronics Show 2024 (CES 2024) exposition held in Las Vegas early last month, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe reportedly tipped that the Honda NSX nameplate will be reborn as an all-electric sportscar in the coming years.
Mibe told Autocar UK that the new NSX will form part of the Japanese automaker’s upcoming radical new EV line-up. Mibe added that Honda is already “researching sportscars for the EV era”, even confirming that its R&D centre already has a sportscar in its midst.
Mibe didn’t confirm any further details regarding what the production version of Honda’s first EV sportscar could look like. Instead, he notes that the development work for which is “Steadily proceeding.”
Also marketed as the Acura NSX in North American, the first-gen model (left) was produced between 1995 and 2005, whilst the second-gen (right) was produced between 2016 and 2022.
Sources online tout that this NSX EV successor is set to serve as a halo for the recently revealed O Series range of EVs Honda showcased in concept forms at CES 2024. The latter’s production-bound iterations are poised for market entry sometime in 2026.
At the heart of the O Series are a raft of technical innovations aimed at maximizing interior space, lowering battery weight, and further improving on efficiency. All this comes on top of the promise that these will also promote ‘driving joy’ with an emphasis on driver engagement.
“We have not decided on mass production or timing but, personally, I would like to make it happen,” the exec added further. Prior to these recent comments, Mibe had famously said that the third-generation NSX will adopt an electric powertrain back in 2011 when he headed Honda’s R&D.
The Honda NSX, which was also marketed as the Acura NSX in North America, debuted in second-gen and hybrid-powered from back in 2016. Said model was designed and engineered by Honda’s North American arm before production ended in 2022.
