Prasarana Will Expand Cashless Payment Options For Rapid KL Buses, Rail Services
In a major step to improve public transport accessibility in Malaysia, public transport minister Anthony Loke announced plans to introduce open payment systems on public buses.
This project is expected to completely transform the way that both residents and visitors travel, supporting a variety of cashless payment options beyond the conventional Touch 'n Go card.
Minister Loke emphasized at a recent press briefing the government's commitment to enhancing the infrastructure of public transportation, beginning with the installation of an open payment system on RapidKL buses.
This choice was made in response to comments made by a German traveler who had trouble boarding a bus since there was no Touch 'n Go card.
"We recognise that this limitation affects both tourists and locals. We aim to transition toward an open payment system, allowing the use of credit cards, debit cards and other methods," Loke added.
After a tender process, the open payment system which enables a range of cashless transactions is anticipated to be implemented in three to six months. Minister Loke expressed hope that this feature will be operational by year's end, which would be a major milestone in the development of public transportation in the city.
"Ideally, the open payment system will be implemented in the next three to six months. We hope to have it in place by the end of this year, at least for Rapid KL buses," Loke said.
In addition to providing flexible payment options, the government is focusing on building more physical infrastructure to assist users of public transportation. Plans call for the construction of over 7,000 meters of covered walkways spanning seven local councils in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, as well as the addition of 344 new bus stops.
In addition to enhancing accessibility, these developments are meant to guarantee a convenient and comfortable commute, particularly during Malaysia's frequent downpours.
