MATTA Eyes Efficient Licensing Processes As PUSPAKOM’s Monopoly Ends

The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) praised the end of the PUSPAKOM monopoly as a critical step towards revitalising the tourist industry. Its president, Nigel Wong emphasised the long-standing issue of inefficiencies in licensing tourism vehicles.

This inefficiency has caused substantial challenges and dissatisfaction to the operators. This milestone pretty much ushers in a new era of transport, with numerous benefits for stakeholders and customers alike. The association also expressed hope that the Minister would examine their ideas to retain the tourism sector's competitiveness.

In light of this the association further encouraged the Ministry of Finance and the Royal Malaysian Customs to address concerns such as excessive insurance premiums for tourism vehicle operators and a lack of luxury vehicle permits, which are impeding Malaysia's standing as a luxury tourist destination.

MATTA emphasised the advantages of increased competition in the inspection services market, predicting higher service quality, lower wait times, and greater efficiency. The availability of different inspection providers is expected to spur innovation, resulting in faster, more precise, and user-friendly inspection processes.

While advocating for the use of cutting-edge technologies to speed up inspections and improve customer satisfaction, MATTA emphasised the significance of rigorous regulatory monitoring to maintain compliance with industry standards and safety laws. Government oversight is believed necessary for promoting fair competition and maintaining industry best practices.

Having said that, the Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke has stated earlier last month that a new set of vehicle licensing standards would be revealed on April 15, however based on the report we can ascertain that to date there has been no other party appointed to shoulder the responsibility alongside Puspakom.
