Proton Saga Surpasses 2-Millionth Unit Sales Mark

The Proton Saga has surpassed a major milestone this week as it saw its 2,000,000th unit sold.
In the midst of a packed week dominated by the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 (MAS 2024), national carmaker Proton still found the opportunity to celebrate a major milestone. Earlier this week, it announced via Facebook that the Proton Saga has surpassed the 2-millionth unit sales mark.
With 2,000,000 units sold thus far and counting, perhaps Proton was well within its right to christen the Saga as “Malaysia’s Favourite Car” in its promotional image to announce the milestone. This is also well reflected by the fact that the Saga constantly stands as a monthly best-seller for Proton.
As you may know, the Saga nameplate has been around for four generations now since the first one debuted in 1985. An all-new second-generation follow-up came in 2008 to replace its Mitsubishi-based predecessor, whilst a third-generation version came in 2016, followed by a face-lifted fourth-gen version bowed in 2019.
Whilst the first-generation model spawned a five-door hatch (liftback or ‘Aeroback’) and stretched limousine offshoots, the classic three-box sedan format is what many Malaysians relate the Saga to. Though basic, said form’s presentation in a highly sensible and affordable package arguably made the Saga a true winner.
In fact, it was the first-gen Saga in sedan form that was chosen to be immortalised as a Hot Wheels toy collectible, and that alone says a lot indeed.

Have you gotten yours yet?
Presently, the Saga is available in four guises (Standard MT, Standard AT, Premium AT, and Premium S AT). All share same 1.3-litre 4-cyl VVT petrol mill outputting 94 HP and 120 NM to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual or 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission (depending on variant).
Whilst levels of kit vary from variant to variant, its floor and ceiling prices as low as RM34,800 and RM44,800 respectively means that there’s a Saga variant that will fit just about anyone’s needs and budget.
Despite the industry’s highly charged shift towards electrification, we reckon the Saga will continue to remain as a mainstay as is over the next few more years at least.
