Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Charts New EV Record at Pikes Peak

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has charted a new Pikes Peak record for both the EV production and EV modified categories.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has charted a new record at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The manic EV crossover hatch has broken the record for both the Electric Modified and Production SUV/Crossover categories.

For the Electric Modified category, Hyundai has fielded two Ioniq 5 N TA Specs, with the first car driven by WRC alum Dani Sordo clocking in at 9:30.825 to set a new record. Meanwhile, the second Ioniq 5 TA, driven by Randy Pobst, finished 25 seconds behind the record-breaking car at 9:55.551.

Differentiating the purpose-built Ioniq 5 N TA from its production twin are a slew of extreme aero and performance parts. Included are the massive rear spoiler, extra-wide fenders, an aggressive aero kit, and 18-inch forged wheels shod in Yokohama racing slicks. The souped-up Ioniq 5 N also benefits from beefier brakes, adjustable racing suspensions, and a peppier dual motor AWD setup rated at 678 HP.

As for the Production SUV/Crossover category, Hyundai has also fielded two Ioniq 5 Ns, with one of them driven by rookie driver Ron Zaras. Clocking in at 10:49.267, this makes the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N the fastest production EV to complete the Pikes Peak hill climb race.

Meanwhile, the second production Ioniq 5 N was driven by stunt driver Paul Dallenbach. Unfortunately, Dallenbach sustained a minor injury during the practice run that kept him from setting the best lap. Despite the injury, the stunt driver managed to drive home the Ioniq 5 N at a decent pre-race time of 10:33.86 – just a few seconds away from the overall production record of 10:32.064 set by the Lamborghini Urus Performance back in 2022.

Following the success of both EVs in the Pikes Peak run this year, Hyundai confirmed that it will launch more special-spec models like the aforementioned Ioniq 5 N TA and the Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup Car.
“Going forward, we plan to continue leveraging exciting motorsports activities such as Pikes Peak to showcase the superior performance of our mass-produced vehicles and continue to develop technology that not only meets customer needs but exceeds their expectations,” said Hyundai N brand boss Till Wartenberg.
