This Nyobolt EV Prototype Charges to 80% in Just 5 Minutes
This new EV prototype by Nyobolt harnesses a new battery tech that can be charged to 80% in just five minutes.
Putting aside the lack of charging infrastructure, one of the biggest pet peeves EV owners must face is waiting for the car to be charged. This is especially true for long-distance travel with an EV, with owners needing to wait roughly an hour for their car to be fully charged.
Fortunately, that might change once and for all, thanks to this new battery technology featured on this new EV prototype by UK EV tech startup Nyobolt. According to the firm, this sportscar prototype can be charged from 10-80% in just four minutes and 37 seconds, while a four-minute charge grants the car up to 190 KM of EV range. These fast-charging feats are thanks to the car’s 350 kW DCFC capability.
Before you get excited about this EV, we need to lay down some caveats. First things first, this EV prototype harnesses a small 35-kWh battery pack, granting it a mere WLTP range of 249 KM. For reference, the new MINI Cooper EV harnesses a 40.7-kWh battery pack for the baseline E spec, boasting a better WLTP range of 305 KM.
Although it’s easy to understand that having a tiny battery means that you get less range, Nyobolt tried to spin this as a positive by saying that a smaller pack allows the car to be charged faster. Not to mention, a smaller battery also means that the car is lightweight, thus providing an edge on the performance front. For reference, this Nyobolt EV prototype tips the scale at just 1,250 KG, which is quite light for an EV standard.
However, Nyobolt further explains that this new battery pack uses “next-generation patented carbon and metal oxide anode materials," which makes it better than the standard batteries used on many other EVs out there. Particularly, the firm claimed that they have solved the battery degradation problem, with their unit already withstanding over 4,000 full DoD (Depth of Discharge) fast charge cycles, equating to over 965,606 KM.
Besides flexing on its new battery technology and charging capabilities, Nyobolt has yet to mention any plans to bring this new EV prototype. However, the firm is confident that they can commence low-volume production for this new battery tech within a year.
