Over 58,700 VEP Applications Received In Two Months - Loke
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced in May that Malaysia will require all foreign-registered vehicles entering the country by land from Singapore to use vehicle entry permits (VEPs) starting October 1.
He stated at a press conference that any foreign motor vehicle entering or remaining in Malaysia without a VEP will face penalties.
According to the minister, as of August 2024, the government had received over 58,700 applications for the vehicle entry permit (VEP) in just two months.
Out of the total, 19,640 applications were completed, with VEP tags collected or delivered to applicants. He added that approximately 40% of the total applications, or 24,104, were incomplete, causing a delay in the approval process.

Loke also said that a lot of Singaporeans chose to finish the application process in person at the VEP collection center.
After their application is approved, the candidate can pick up their VEP radio frequency identification card (RFID) tag at the center. In addition, he said that car owners would only have to pay RM10 for a five-year RFID tag and an additional RM29.50 for service.
Each vehicle is uniquely identified by its RFID tag, which is non-transferable.

The Causeway connecting Malaysia and Singapore is one of the busiest land border crossings in the world, with an estimated 120,000 vehicles crossing it every day. Singaporean vehicles will continue to pay the current road charge of RM20 per entry and will be scanned upon entry and exit upon the implementation of the VEP.
For the record, the VEP has been in effect since 2019 but has not been enforced. The system was put on hold in 2020 while the government looked into ways to make RFID tag installation easier.
