We’ve just wrapped up an 800 KM round trip from Subang Jaya to Desaru Coast and back in the soon-to-be-launched Haval H6 HEV from GWM. From which, it’s easy to see why this model has been China’s best-selling SUV for 12 consecutive years. However, we do wish Malaysia had received the latest iteration.

The Haval H6 HEV is powered by a 1.5L 4-cyl turbo mill that’s augmented by an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 240 HP and 530 Nm. Built on GWM’s proprietary LEMON platform, this hybrid powertrain proved highly capable during our journey, providing effortless performance with stability, the latter through high-speed corners too.

In fact, this CKD variant felt even better than the version we initially test drove last year, when it was first previewed to the media.

Inside, the cabin is spacious, offering ample legroom plus a generous 560-litre boot that’s also expandable to 1,485 litres. The plush, supportive seats ensure comfort for all passengers while the ventilated seats for the driver and front passenger contribute to a relaxed, enjoyable drive - nifty for long trips.

A standout feature here is the Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) primed. The adaptive cruise control was a game changer, significantly reducing long-distance fatigue. It responds smoothly to changing traffic conditions, making lane changes fluid and minimising the need for sudden braking, a relief on busy highways where unpredictable drivers can test your patience and reflexes.

Throughout our drive, we averaged a fuel efficiency rate of 14 KM/L, a respectable figure considering we weren’t focused on hypermiling.

Now, the H6 HEV is by no means a perfect car—no car is, in fact. During our time with it, we noticed a few areas where improvement could be made.

The centre console and certain parts of the dashboard, for instance, feature hard plastic that looked and felt a tad cheap. Additionally, the choice of rose gold accents on some parts of the dash and steering may not appeal to everyone, though some might find it stylish.

As for NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) levels, we did observe some wind noise once we passed speeds of 150 KM/H, while tyre noise became noticeable from 140 KM/H. The H6 HEV tops out at 180 KM/H, so it’s something to keep in mind if you frequently drive at high speeds.

With an expected sub-RM145,000 price tag promised, the Haval H6 HEV does seem to offer tremendous value, especially compared to the Honda CRV e:HEV - its only rival in the C-segment hybrid SUV space that costs much more at RM195,900.

The Haval H6 HEV is now available for bookings, and you can view it at all GWM showrooms nationwide. Why not take it for a spin and see for yourself?
