AFA Allocates RM2.1b For KL-Karak Highway Widening Project; Scheduled To Begin Jan 2025
In a statement released yesterday, AFA, formerly known as Anih Berhad, the concessionaire for the KL-Karak Highway and Lebuhraya Pantai Timur (LPT) 1, said that its next project, the KL-Karak Widening Project, is a prime example of its dedication to improving safety and connectivity.
The Karak highway has seen an increase in traffic over the years, and it is particularly congested on weekends and during festivals. The RM2.1 billion allocation is set to tackle traffic and safety issues on one of the busiest highways in Malaysia, the company said.
This 48-month project, which is expected to start in January 2025, is anticipated to boost economic activity along the East Coast corridor, lower accident risks, and greatly increase travel efficiency.
Important improvements include converting dual two-lane roads to dual three-lane roads from Genting Sempah to Bentong Toll Plaza, turning dual three-lane roads into dual four-lane roads with a new two-lane tunnel from Gombak Toll Plaza to Genting Sempah, and adding cutting-edge safety features like wider shoulders, improved traffic management systems, and slope stabilisation to facilitate better incident management.
In order to improve highway resilience during severe weather conditions, AFA is initiating the Flood Mitigation Project to solve the issues caused by flooding along the LPT1 highway. This RM200 million project is anticipated to be finished in December 2028.
Improvement measures include upgrading the drainage system to efficiently handle higher water volumes, strengthening and extending culverts to improve water flow and structural integrity, elevating roads in flood-prone areas to prevent waterlogging and preserve access, stabilising slopes and embankments to prevent landslides and soil erosion, and strategically managing vegetation to maximise water absorption and reduce runoff.
