More updates on the on-going investigation of the express bus passenger electrocuted to death late last week in Penang.

Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke revealed yesterday that the express bus operator involved had failed the Occupational Safety and Health Industry Code of Practice for Road Activities 2010 (ICOP) audit conducted by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

Loke said the company in question now faces suspension of its operating permit following said results. “JPJ will refer the matter to the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), as the authority for suspending permits lies with APAD,” clarified Loke further.

As a refresher, an 18-year-old male passenger was found dead in his seat of an express in Penang Sentral, Penang, late last week. Investigators believe the youth was electrocuted to death whilst charging his mobile phone using an on board power socket.

The incident saw the Ministry of Transport immediately establish a special task force comprised of investigators from MIROS, JPJ and APAD to investigate the incident. To date, a preliminary investigation has been completed, but no findings have been published yet.

Instead, the Ministry of Transport has issued a temporary ban for all express bus passengers in Malaysia from using power sockets or charging outlets aboard express buses now pending the aforementioned investigation’s findings.

Additionally, Loke also took the opportunity to denied accusations and allegations of his misuse of power by immediately suspended operations for the express bus firm involved. “I only stated that the bus operation was suspended, no the company’s permit,” added Loke.
