Honda Set to Commence Solid-State Battery Production in Jan 2025

Ahead of its planned operational date in Jan 2025, Honda has unveiled its new demo production facility for solid-state batteries.
Honda is prepping itself for the production of its solid-state batteries later in January 2025, with the automaker recently unveiling a demonstration facility. Located at Sakura City in Japan, this demo facility serves to replicate the process required for mass production of solid-state batteries in the near future.

With a total floor area of approximately 295,000 square-feet spread across three main buildings, this demo facility is equipped with all the necessary equipment needed for solid-state battery production. This includes production processes such as weighing and mixing the electrode materials, the formation of battery cells, the assembly of the battery module, and many more.
With the development of its proprietary solid-state batteries being made independently by the automaker, this demo facility will serve an integral role in determining the basic specifications of the battery cells for mass production.

Given the complex nature of solid-state batteries that use dry conductive materials instead of liquid electrolytes found in conventional lithium-ion batteries, their production process may be more complicated and require some fine-tuning from the manufacturers’ side to ensure their cost-effectiveness and optimum production time. One of the efforts Honda has taken to reduce the production time is by introducing a unique roll-pressing technique that can increase the density of the solid electrolyte layers continuously in a relatively short time.

Using these techniques and many others at its demo production facility, Honda hopes to further improve and streamline their production efforts for solid-state batteries, which will take place some time later in 2025. These solid-state batteries made by Honda will be introduced to some of its electrified models later this decade, which includes both battery EVs (BEVs) and hybrids (HEVs) alike.
It comes as no surprise that automakers like Honda are rapidly pursuing solid-state battery productions, as this tech promises to be a game-changer in the electromobility adoption, as it offers higher energy density and longer life spans, while at the same time being more cost-effective in the long run compared to lithium-ion batteries of late.
