JPJePlate For ICE Vehicles Showcased At ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting

Malaysia's journey toward modernising its vehicle registration system is taking another significant step forward. Initially launched exclusively for New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), the new format, JPJePlate is set to gradually encompass all vehicles, including internal combustion engine (ICE) models.

The revamped JPJePlate was first introduced in September 2024 for newly registered electric vehicles (EVs). Characterised by a distinct green strip on the left side bearing the Malaysian flag, this design aimed to symbolise the nation’s commitment to sustainability and its push toward electrification.

From Nov 9 onward, this JPJePlate option was made available to all EVs, including those already on the road. However, its adoption remains optional for now. Priced at RM98 excluding installation, the JPJePlate for the time being can only be manufactured by one single supplier Handal Ceria.
A preview of how the format will be implemented for non-NEVs was showcased during the recent ASEAN Transport Ministers (ATM) and Senior Transport Officials (STOM) Meeting in Malaysia. The Toyota Alphards and Vellfires used to transport ministers were fitted with temporary JPJePlate bearing distinctive identifiers: ATM and STOM.

These JPJePlate retained the key design elements of the NEV plates, such as the Malaysian flag and the standardised font, with one notable difference - the green strip on the left was replaced with a white one. Additionally, instead of the Malaysian flag, the plates featured the national flag of the country the respective vehicles were ferrying.
The introduction of a uniform number plate design is more than just a visual update - it aims to streamline registration processes, improve enforcement, and align Malaysia with international standards.
