Suzuki Has No Plans To Make Jimny Electric

The Suzuki Jimny, a popular compact 4x4 since its launch in 1970, will not be converted into an electric vehicle (EV) anytime soon. Despite strong demand in the United Kingdom, the Jimny is only available in Europe as a two-seater commercial vehicle due to strict emissions regulations.
The brand believes that keeping Jimny's core features intact is critical to its success. Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki explained that an electric version would jeopardize Jimny's signature lightweight feel, which is prized by enthusiasts.

It appears that Suzuki will only install combustion engines for the time being, unless technological advancements allow otherwise. These claims, however, stand in stark contrast to the announcement made in 2023, when Suzuki prominently featured an image of an electric off-road vehicle that distinctly resembled a Jimny in its roadmap presentation.

Autocar reported that the carmaker instead intends to look into alternative fuels, like biofuels or e-fuels, which would complement Jimny's traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) design. According to Toshihiro, the company is putting durability and performance for professional users first, even though many people anticipated an EV or hybrid Jimny for the European market.
Suzuki's choice to hold off on producing new EVs is indicative of the market's difficulties. Suzuki is reassessing its EV rollout strategy in light of declining government incentives and growing competition from low-cost Chinese EVs. In order to keep Jimny relevant in the future, the emphasis is still on preserving its genuine appeal while taking sustainable fuel options into account.
This may be bittersweet news for fans of the 2018 launch of the current generation Jimny. The standard passenger version was discontinued in 2021 to avoid strict emissions regulations, leaving only the two-seater LCV version available to European consumers.
There was some optimism that the forthcoming mid-cycle update, which would include mild-hybrid or self-charging hybrid powertrain options, would revive the full passenger model. It appears that the Jimny will not receive the technology, even though it is already present in other Suzuki models.
