Amendment In Road Transport Act To Curb “Mat Rempit” Issue
The Ministry of Transport (MOT) is finalising amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) to tackle the "Mat Rempit" issue which for decades has been a nuisance endangering the general public.
This was announced by Deputy MOT Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah who stated that the amendments will clearly define offenses such as reckless riding and illegal street racing while introducing harsher penalties to deter these behaviors.
The proposed amendments have been submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) for review and the government hopes when it comes into effect will act as an effective deterrent.
In terms of enforcement, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the police regularly conduct joint operations, such as Ops Samseng Jalanan with the help of respective local councils. Meanwhile MOT, through JPJ, also works closely with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) to control the sale and illegal modification of motorcycles.
Hasbi also emphasized the government’s consistent efforts are focused on reducing illegal racing, promoting safer road practices, and addressing the broader issues related to youth involvement in such activities.
