Nio Firefly EV Is A Compact Hatch Malaysia May Never See

At the recent Nio Day conference in Guangzhou, Nio unveiled the first electric vehicle (EV) under its new Firefly brand – a compact hatchback aimed at urban and global markets. Preorders for the Firefly EV have commenced in China, with prices starting at RMB 148,800 (RM 92,000).

However, Nio did not detail if this preorder price is inclusive of the physical battery as the Firefly EV like all other Nio models features swappable battery technology. Nio’s CEO, William Li, announced that the vehicle would be officially launched in Apr 2025 at the Shanghai Auto Show.

The Firefly compact hatchback is designed to fit in both the urban environment and global markets, featuring striking exterior features which includes a tri-circular front and rear combination lights with black grille.
One glance at the Firefly compact hatchback, the design unmistakably resembles Honda’s compact hatchback offering the Honda E. The Firefly features a short hood and a wide C-pillar design. Initially designed to be first launched in the European market, the Firefly EV boasts a turning radius of just 4.7 meters, making it ideal for navigating narrow European streets and parking spaces.

Despite its compact size, the Firefly EV offers practicality with a frunk capacity of 92 liters and an expandable booth space of over 1,250 liters when the seats are folded down. This ensures flexibility for various use cases, from daily commutes to weekend getaways.
The Firefly EV which was designed to take on the smart and Mini market is expected to feature a 120 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack with an above average energy density of 292kWh/kg.

The Firefly EV has also earned a five-star safety rating under the Chinese NCAP 2024 standards, thanks to its 83.4% high-strength steel construction, providing torsional rigidity of 35,700 Nm/degree. Additionally, the Firefly EV will also come equipped with up to nine airbags and an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS).

Initially planned for a European launch, the Firefly’s debut was shifted to China due to increased tariffs. Under the new tariff ruling, Nio, like many other Chinese EV manufacturers, faces an additional 20.7% tariff on top of the existing 10%. The Firefly’s European, Latin American, and Southeast Asian (SEA) debuts are now scheduled for later in the year.

Despite its SEA ambitions, at CariCarz, we have our doubts on the practicality of setting up an entire battery swapping ecosystem in countries like Malaysia where even the simpler EV charging network growth has been rather slow lately. Imagine you have to hunt for a swapping station in Klang valley, or a long queuing up for one due to the scarcity of such stations.
