RHD Geely Galaxy E5 Being Developed Alongside LHD - Possibly Proton’s First EV?
The Geely Galaxy E5, which we highlighted last month, is likely to serve as the foundation for Proton's upcoming electric vehicle (EV) that’s set for launch soon - by 2025. The Galaxy E5 is notable for being the first EV in the Galaxy series designed for both domestic and international markets simultaneously.
As previously reported, the Galaxy E5, which measures 4,615 MM with a 2,750 MM wheelbase,1,901 MM wide and 1,670 MM tall, is based on the new Geely Electric Architecture (GEA) - an extension of the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform used for the smart #1 and Lotus Eletre. This could result in the potential to tap into the 800-volt design, allowing for faster charging if it is made available by Proton.
Rumours suggest two battery options will be available: 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh, offering ranges of 440 KM and 530 KM respectively under the CLTC cycle. Proton is currently testing both right-hand drive (RHD) and left-hand drive (LHD) versions in China, indicating a potential global release under the Proton brand in overseas RHD markets.
This could be one of the reasons behind Proton's announcement to establish an R&D hub within Geely's industrial site. This raises the question of whether this model, like the Proton X70, will be sold as Proton rather than Geely in RHD nations.
It was also stated that the Galaxy E5 will harness the GEEA 3.0 electronic and electrical architecture, cell-to-body integration (CTB), the Galaxy 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive motor, and the Flyme Auto HMI system.
The Galaxy E5, will be powered by Geely's self-developed Aegis short knife lithium-iron phosphate batteries. Geely, like GAC and BYD, claims the battery is extremely safe and protects it from direct impacts in collision circumstances.
The E5's electric motor delivers 160 kW (215 HP) and supports a top speed of 175 KM/H. Aerodynamically, it boasts a low drag coefficient rate of 0.269 Cd, thanks to features like flush hidden door handles and other optimizations.
Stepping inside, the Galaxy E5's dash will feature a large floating centre infotainment screen, an instrument cluster display, and a head-up display akin to the Smart #1. It was also announced before that the entertainment system will be powered by Flyme Auto software and a Dragon Eagle-1 7nm processor.
Prices are now projected to be between RMB150,000 and RMB200,000 (RM99,000 to RM131,000) in China, with deliveries beginning in the second half of the year. However, export market variants, especially RHD ones, should start shipping out in the first half of next year.
We will just have to wait and see if this RHD model would be marketed under the Proton marque.
