Nearly 7,000 Road Traffic Fatalities Recorded In 2023 - Loke
According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, there were nearly 7,000 traffic fatalities in 2023. Citing police data, the Transport Minister stated that 6,443 fatalities were reported in 2023, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to lowering the terrible death toll from traffic accidents.
In addition to providing daily data on road accident fatalities, the ministry introduced the Road-Safety Plan 2022–2030 in an effort to minimize traffic fatalities and dramatically increase public awareness of the alarmingly high number of road accident deaths, Loke added.
To achieve this challenging goal, he said the plan outlines ten priority areas that address various road safety issues. “The first three-year action plan (2022–2024) focuses on establishing governance platforms and mechanisms for effectively monitoring and evaluating road safety interventions across these ten areas. “As we near the end of this first action plan, it is time to review our progress, refine our strategies and prepare for the next three-year plan (2025-2027) to reduce road traffic fatalities further,” he said. Road crash injuries and fatalities are a major global concern. The World Health Organization reports that the greatest cause of death for individuals between the ages of five and 29 is traffic accidents.

This pattern is clearly visible in Malaysia, where the number of traffic accident cases reported increased from 545,588 in 2022 to 598,635 in 2023. The increase in fatalities is equally concerning.
Loke emphasized the importance of public transportation in Malaysia's road safety system. However, because Malaysia is reliant on private vehicles, more efforts must be made to ensure the health and safety of road users while also reducing road accidents and fatalities.
