MOT Announces Special Heavy Vehicles Task Force, Bodycams For JPJ Staff

Earlier today, Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke announced a series of new plans by his ministry. Key amongst which were the establishment of a special heavy vehicles task force by the ministry, as well as the introduction of bodycams for Road Transport Department (JPJ) staff.

Starting with the latter, Loke stated that the measure was specifically requested by JPJ Director General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli. The aim for which is to ensure the highest standard of image, safety, and integrity for officers on duty.

This echoes what was mooted by JPJ Deputy Director General (Planning and Operations) Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi prior, who reportedly stated that the use of bodycams for enforcement officers was essential towards enhancing integrity amongst its ranks and to improve public trust.

“The use of bodycams not only protects the image and integrity of JPJ, but it also safeguards the officers themselves,” added Loke during his briefing to the press today. He also emphasised that the cameras would prevent common misunderstandings that often arise during enforcement.

“Discussions are underway to secure immediate funding for the procurement, and I hope that JPJ officers will be equipped with the body cameras within this year,” added Loke regarding the matter.

Besides that, another critical new effort by the Ministry of Transport (MOT )this year is the establishment of a special task force aimed towards comprehensively addressing heavy vehicles safety issues. Loke also confirmed that MOT secretary general Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan, will chair this task force.

“This special task force no longer aims to study and see what can be implemented, but to start the implementation of what can be done… What policies can be discussed and rolled out immediately,” explained Loke further about this special task force’s true purpose.

Loke further added that this task force will involve various stakeholders to formulate effective strategies for the safety of all road users. However, unlike the other initiative detailed, Loke did not specify a specific timeline for this new task force’s establishment yet.

Another critical initiative announced by Loke today too was a review of laws such as the Road transport Act 1987 and Land Public Transport Act 2010 specifically to ensure more effective penalties for offences such as overloading.

Other initiatives announced by Loke today included enhanced and integrated multi-agency enforcement, the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in digitising the delivery of transportation services, and more.
