Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM) has released a new image for its upcoming midsize SUV crossover model, the next-gen Haval H7. Unveiled by Haval brand’s general manager Zhao Yongpo via his official Weibo, the China-spec, second-gen H7 is said to be based on the Haval Xiaolong Max, which is another midsize SUV model under the brand’s arm.

From the images, you’ll immediately see that the new H7 somewhat resembles the Xiaolong Max, as it gets the same stylish SUV bodystyle with a sporty, coupe SUV-esque roofline at the rear. Some key design parts that separate the new H7 from the Xiaolong Max include the sharp LED headlights with a full-width LED light bar at the front and matching LED taillights, sharp shoulder lines, and two-tone alloy wheels, to name a few.

Prior to this official image unveiling, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) previously published some details regarding this new midsize SUV, including its overall dimensions and supposed powertrain specs. Size-wise, the new H7 measures 4,780 MM long, 1,895 MM wide, 1,725 MM tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,810 MM, thus making it roughly the same size as the aforementioned Xiaolong Max, as well as other Chinese midsize SUVs like the Exeed RX—also known as the Omoda C9 in our market.

As for its powertrain, MIIT reports that the new H7 will adopt GWM’s proprietary Hi4 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology in the form of a 1.5-litre 4-cyl nat-asp petrol engine rated at 114 HP and a single electric motor. Juice is provided by a 27.54-kWh LFP-type battery pack that grants the new H7 PHEV with up to 126 KM of pure electric range, at least according to the lenient CLTC standards.

For reference, the Xiaolong Max uses the same 1.5-litre 4-cyl petrol mill as the base for its PHEV setup, albeit featuring a slightly smaller 19.27-kWh battery pack that is good enough for up to 83 KM of pure electric range on the more realistic WLTC standards.

The second-gen GWM Haval H7 was originally slated to replace the ongoing model in 2024, with MIIT reports on said model arising back in Oct last year. The first-gen Haval H7 was first launched back in April 2016, where it became one of the brand’s best-selling models instantly, with over 50,000 units sold in the first eight months of its sales.

However, the H7’s sales started to fall down immediately after GWM launched its new Wey sub-brand, followed by the arrival of its smaller and more affordable sibling, the Haval H6, back in 2020.
