Port Klang Will Limit Overloaded Hauliers Beginning May 1

The Star reports that the Port Klang Authority (PKA) will be imposing restrictions on haulage trucks that exceed the allowable total vehicle weight (BGK) when transporting goods to and from Northport and Westport in Port Klang. PKA Chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah stated that trucks exceeding the permitted weight limit will not be allowed to transport cargo in these areas.
“The National Logistics Centre, which is under the transport ministry, has instructed PKA to fully enforce restrictions on haulage trucks carrying loads exceeding the BGK to or from the port. Import transactions will be reviewed at booking level and bookings will be rejected if the total load exceeds the BGK”, Ean Yong said.

He further emphasized the stringent measures being implemented to ensure compliance with the BGK weight limit. Export transactions will now involve mandatory weighing of vehicles at the port entrance.
Vehicles found to have violated the BGK weight limit three times will be completely prohibited from entering the ports. However, this restriction will be enforced on the offending vehicle, not the company that owns it.

The decision to impose weight limits on haulage trucks was made by the national logistics task force meeting, chaired by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, on November 25th of last year. This decision followed a study conducted between December 30th and 31st of last year to determine the number of vehicles registered with PKA and the number exceeding the BGK.
