Malaysia Invests RM1.9 Billion to Upgrade Bus Fleet with EV Focus
![]()
The government is investing RM1.9 billion to upgrade Prasarana Malaysia Bhd’s bus fleet in the Klang Valley and Penang, with a strong focus on electrification (EV), says Finance Minister II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
As part of this initiative, 240 EV buses and 310 diesel buses are already being delivered, with another 1,100 buses arriving in stages. The introduction of EV buses aligns with Malaysia’s push for greener and more sustainable public transport.
The introduction of more EV buses marks a significant step towards modernizing and decarbonizing Malaysia’s public transport system.

Additionally, the Transport Ministry and local councils are working on expanding dedicated bus lanes to improve efficiency.
Beyond fleet upgrades, RM55 million has been allocated to enhance last-mile connectivity through the Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT) system. Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the number of DRT vans will increase from 110 to 320 by June, expanding service coverage from 37 zones to 101 in the Klang Valley and Penang.
In addition to this, steps are also being taken to ensure seamless payment for DRT services, allowing passengers to pay with debit or credit cards, alongside existing options like Touch ‘n Go cards, MyRapid Concession Cards, OKU Smile Travel Pass, and Unlimited Travel Passes (My50, MyCity & Family Pass).
