MOT: 45,737 EVs Registered, 1,450 Electric Bus By 2025

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) announced in a parliamentary written response to an inquiry from YB Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir (Perikatan-Setiu) on infrastructure developments for a green transportation framework that 45,737 EVs were registered with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) as of August this year.
This rapid growth was boosted by road tax exemptions introduced for EVs in 2022 to encourage adoption nationwide.

Additionally, the ministry also highlighted that Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) is making strides in expanding its electric bus fleet, with a commitment to acquire a total of 1,450 electric buses. Phase one of this plan will see the acquisition of 250 new electric buses this year, with the remaining 1,200 buses slated for deployment in 2025.

At Carz.com.my, we can confirm that this fleet expansion is underway, as earlier this week, where a site visitation for potential tender contenders commenced at 17 Prasarana bus depots nationwide that is set to receive upgrades, including the installation of electric vehicle charging bays (EVCBs).
Impressively, Prasarana aims to achieve a 1:1 bus-to-charging bay ratio, with 1,450 EVCBs across these depots.

The MOT also outlined advancements in urban rail electrification, with solar photovoltaic (PV) installations planned for locations including Batu Gajah, Seremban, and Kempas depots, managed by Railway Asset Corporation (RAC) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB). These upgrades support Malaysia’s transition to a sustainable transport ecosystem.
