MOT Lowers School Zone Speed Limit To 30 KM/H
The speed limit in school zones will soon be officially reduced to 30 KM/H as part of efforts to enhance road safety, particularly for schoolchildren.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook announced that the Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion (JKMKKJR) has approved a policy to lower the speed limit in all school zones from the current 50 KM/H to 30 KM/H.
He cited scientific studies showing that reducing speed to 30 KM/H significantly lowers the risk of fatalities in the event of a road accident.
“On average, about 70 road users lose their lives each year due to accidents in school areas,” he said during a press conference following the 61st Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Road Safety Council (MKJR), where the ‘My Safe Road’ programme was also launched.
Loke explained that this initiative is in line with international standards and not a new concept. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other global bodies have long advocated for lower speed limits, particularly in school zones, as a proven method to reduce the severity of road injuries.
Research shows that the risk of fatal accidents increases significantly at speeds above 30 KM/H, especially for vulnerable road users.
