Myvi, Yamaha 135LC Most Involved In Accidents, Toyota Hilux Most Stolen
Road accidents remain a big issue in Malaysia. Despite efforts by the government through road repairs, public awareness, and enforcing laws, the numbers aren't getting better.
In 2024, the nation saw more than 266,716 traffic accidents, which really shows how prevalent they are. Car accidents made up the highest number, with 229,739 cases, followed by 21,828 involving commercial vehicles and motorcycles (15,149).
Perodua Myvi and Yamaha 135LC top the chart as the vehicles most frequently involved in accidents last year. This is perhaps unsurprising given the issues surrounding the former, often dubbed the 'king of the road'.
According to Mas Tina Abdul Hamid of the Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council (VTAREC), insurance data reveals 24,628 claims were made for the Perodua Myvi last year. The Proton Saga came in second with 16,159 claims, and the Honda City wasn't far behind with 13,388.
"This is not just a claim; it is based on statistics: 24,628 Perodua Myvi were involved in accidents, followed by the Proton Saga with 16,159 and the Honda City with 13,388," she says in a NST report.
Meanwhile, Mas Tina stated that the Toyota Hilux was the top target for car thieves in Malaysia last year, with 370 reported cases. The Toyota Fortuner (123) and Proton Wira (142) were also popular with thieves, coming in second and third place.
Other frequently stolen cars included the Perodua Kancil (89), Ford Ranger (79), Perodua Myvi (79), Perodua Bezza (61), Honda Civic (58), and the Proton Iswara and Proton Saga, both with 92 thefts reported.
