Thai Ambassador Proposes ECRL Extension To Sungai Golok

Thailand’s Ambassador to Malaysia Lada Phumas told Bernama in an interview that extending the ECRL from Kota Bharu to Sungai Golok is essential for better rail links, logistics, and trade between Thailand and Malaysia.
She proposed upgrading the Sungai Golok station to connect with Thailand's rail network, potentially linking to Hatyai through Padang Besar, thereby improving regional logistical integration.
With the potential for further extensions, the Pan-Asia Railway Network (PARN), a key infrastructure project linking China, Singapore, and mainland Southeast Asian countries will strengthen regional ties, according to Phumas.
Currently, Malaysia is working on its portion of a continuous double-track railway connecting Johor Bahru and Padang Besar. This enhanced connectivity, as highlighted by the ambassador, is expected to improve mobility, boost trade, and generate substantial economic advantages for the participating nations.

“Improved rail connectivity would provide a more affordable and efficient alternative for freight transport, compared to air and road options,” she said.
In addition to rail connectivity, Phumas said Malaysia and Thailand can collaborate in the halal sector by Thailand supplying ingredients and Malaysia offering certification expertise, leveraging existing rail links to strengthen the halal supply chain.
