Huawei Patents 3,000km, 5-Minute Charge Battery

A solid-state battery offering over 3,000 kilometres of range and a full charge in just five minutes sounds far-fetched, especially when this technology is still considered years away. But with Huawei filing a patent for exactly that, it's worth taking notice.
The Chinese tech giant recently submitted a patent for an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery that boasts exceptionally high ionic conductivity. The proposed design could achieve energy densities between 400 and 500 Wh/kg, potentially double or even triple that of current lithium-ion cells.

To tackle one of the key challenges in early solid-state batteries side reactions, Huawei’s approach involves doping sulphide electrolytes with nitrogen. If successful, this could potentially revolutionise EV performance and convenience.
This innovation aims to minimise harmful side reactions at the lithium interface, enhancing both safety and battery longevity. The absence of flammable liquids further improves safety, particularly under mechanical stress.

Huawei doesn’t make batteries, but it’s diving into battery tech. In early 2025, it filed a patent for sulphide electrolyte synthesis, part of a bigger move by Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Nio to cut reliance on giants like BYD and CATL.
Huawei’s claim of a 3,000 km range and five-minute charging in its patent has raised eyebrows among experts. The real question is whether this kind of tech can actually reach maturity and when.

If scalable, it could be a game-changer for EVs, easing range anxiety, slashing charge times, and giving tech companies more control over their energy supply.
Toyota, for instance, revealed a prototype in 2023 promising a 1,200 km range and 10-minute charge, with commercial availability expected by 2027–2028. CATL is also aiming to begin pilot production of a hybrid solid-state battery by 2027.

China is moving fast, around 7,600 solid-state battery patents are filed there every year, making up nearly 37% of global activity.
