The government is set to overhaul the Demerit Points System for Road Traffic Offences (KEJARA), which has arguably proven to be ineffective in clamping down on traffic offenders since implementation began.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke admitted that the system, introduced to deduct points from drivers who commit traffic violations, has not been functioning as intended.

“It’s clear the KEJARA system isn’t doing what it was meant to do, as drivers with unpaid summonses are not being penalised as they should,” he said at a recent press briefing. Launched in 2017, KEJARA is part of the Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS), which was introduced to reduce road accidents by targeting repeat offenders.

According to Loke, the core issue lies in a loophole that allows many to avoid penalties simply by not settling their fines. The planned revamp aims to address this flaw by ensuring prompt and consistent enforcement, holding errant drivers accountable without unnecessary delays.

Under the current framework, drivers who accumulate too many demerit points risk having their driving licence suspended or revoked.
