In case you didn't know, Volvo invented the modern three-point seatbelt, and made the patent free. Now, the automaker has made new advancements for this basic tech.

Being the automaker that famously invented – and then gave away – the modern and proven three-point seatbelt for cars some 66 years ago, Swedish automaker Volvo has made significant new steps to evolve this basic yet proven life-saving tech.

Revealed this week by the automaker is its new multi-adaptive seatbelt system, which the automaker plans to debut in its upcoming EX60 model for 2026. Essentially, this is a very advanced and more intelligent version of the humble three-point seatbelt.

Marking a world’s first, the multi-adaptive seatbelt system Volvo invented is engineered not just to adapt itself to varying traffic condition, it also self-adjusts to suit the individuals wearing it and further enhance protection against injury and death.

Volvo detailed that the multi-adaptive seatbelt system work by using real-time data from interior, exterior, and crash sensors to customise protection settings. In fact, the system considers individual profiles such as height, weight, body shape, and seating position to deliver optimal restraint in the event of a collision.

Moreover, the system also analyses the unique characteristics of a crash, namely direction, speed, and passenger posture. It then shares this information to the belt, which then selects the most appropriate setting for the situation.

The new multi-adaptive seatbelt system sees Volvo adding intelligence to the basic yet effective three-point seatbelt design and improve its effective protection abilities.

For instance, in a serious crash involving a larger-sized person, the system may engage a higher belt load setting to lower risk of head injuries. In a milder crash involving a petite-sized person instead, the system will engage a lower belt load setting and mitigate risks of causing rib fractures.

This advancement was enabled by increasing the number of load-limiting profile variations from just three to a total of eleven, thus expanding the possible number of setting for the system to engage. This also lets the system fine-tune the amount of force exerted on occupants in the event of an impact.

Additionally, the system is also designed to improve and better itself over time. Enabling this are over-the-air (OTA) software updates, which Volvo will devise by gathering more data. The latter will allow the system to respond to new scenarios and better grasp occupant behaviour too.

This trick adaptive seatbelt tech is set to debut in the upcoming EX60 EV SUV model for 2026, says Volvo.

“The world-first multi-adaptive safety belt is another milestone for automotive safety and a great example of how we leverage real-time data with the ambition to help save millions more lives,” remarked Åsa Haglund, Volvo Cars Safety Centre’s head.

Said facility led by Haglund was where Volvo designed and patented the modern three-point seatbelt back in 1959 – an invention that has arguably saved million of lives since.
