VW Golf GTI Edition 50 Charts New Nurburgring Record for the Brand

The new Golf GTI Edition 50 is now the fastest production Volkswagen to lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
The upcoming Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 has charted a new record for the German brand, as it became the fastest production Volkswagen model to lap the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife track. Clocked at 7:46.13 minutes, this record was set ahead of its official debut at the upcoming Nurburgring 24 Hours endurance race, set to take place later this month.

While the GTI Edition 50’s lap time sounds impressive as it is, it is still not good enough to outright set a new record for the fastest front-wheel drive (FWD) production car to lap the ‘Ring, as that record is still being held by the manic Honda Civic Type R FL5. With that being said, the FL5 Type R’s 7:44.481-minute lap time was recorded with a lightweight kit installed, which is not even on sale in markets outside of Japan.
With that being said, the lap time set by this special GTI is still quite impressive, as it still manages to outpace its all-wheel-drive twin, the VW Golf R 20 Years, which charted a lap time of 7:47:31 minutes. Prior to the Edition 50, the fastest lap recorded by an FWD Golf was the Golf GTI Clubsport S, clocking in at 7:49:21 minutes.

Behind the wheel of the Edition 50 for this record-breaking feat is German racer Benny Leuchter, who was also behind the wheel of both the aforementioned Clubsport S and R 20 Years during their runs.

Impressive lap times aside, VW has yet to reveal the specific details for the upcoming Golf GTI Edition 50, but the automaker did confirm the record-breaking car was equipped with the optional Performance Package. It comprises a special chassis tune, larger 19-inch lightweight forged wheels shod in semi-slick Bridgestone Potenza tyres, and many more.
As for its engine, we can expect the Edition 50 to boast some power upgrades over the standard GTI model. For reference, the facelifted Mk8.5 GTI’s 2.0-litre 4-cyl TSI engine is rated at 262 hp, while the R is capped at up to 328 hp.

The all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 will go on sale along with the 2026 model year (2026 MY) version of the Golf Mk8.5, taking place exactly 50 years since the first Golf GTI Mk1 debuted at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show.
