BYD’s own Zengzhou carrier vessel just made its maiden voyage to Malaysia, capable of carrying up to 7,000 vehicles.

Besides electric cars and buses, top Chinese automaker BYD also makes their own carrier vessel, and one of them, known as the BYD Zengzhou, just made its maiden voyage to Malaysia.

The Zengzhou is the seventh purpose-built roll-on/roll-off (RORO) vessel made by BYD, featuring a carrying capacity of up to 7,000 vehicles at one time. Its first Malaysian voyage is part of Zengzhou’s first journey to Southeast Asia, where the vessel also made several prior scheduled stops at the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore.

The vessel itself made its Malaysian arrival at the North Port in Port Klang yesterday, carrying several fully-built BYD vehicles set for delivery to Malaysian consumers. Following its maiden Malaysian voyage, the Zengzhou will be making its final Southeast Asian stop in Thailand before heading back to China.

Compared to traditional container shipping, Zengzhou’s RORO method, where vehicles are driven directly on and off the vessel, offers substantial time and cost advantages. The results of more efficient logistics allow BYD Malaysia and Sime Motors to realise their shared goal of delivering EVs to Malaysians at a quicker and more reliable pace.

The Zengzhou is part of BYD’s expanding export strategies, where its purpose-built vessel fleet is aimed to further enhance and bolster the automaker’s supply chain and logistic readiness. By operating its own shipping fleet, BYD gains greater control over an integral aspect of its EV supply chain, especially as China continues to lead in EV exports worldwide.

With Zengzhou's maiden voyage to Malaysia, it underscores BYD’s commitment to Malaysia as one of its key markets in this emerging region.

Commenting on this momentous occasion, Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director of Sime Motors, Southeast Asia, said, “This is a significant milestone in our partnership with BYD, symbolising confidence and the growing potential of Malaysia as a vital EV hub. With the enhanced regional supply chain provided by the BYD carrier vessel, we are now assured of shorter delivery times, enabling us to provide better customer satisfaction, making this a win-win situation for all involved.”

“The carrier vessel plays a key role in heightening BYD’s global ambition and reinforces our ties to Malaysia, which we view as instrumental to our growth in Asia Pacific. Built to enhance delivery capabilities, the BYD Zhengzhou ensures faster and more reliable deliveries directly to our customers here,” said Eagle Zhao, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
