Jaecoo J5 and Omoda C9 PHEV Teased - Launching Soon?

Omoda & Jaecoo (O&J) Malaysia just teased two new models that could shake up both ends of the SUV market - the Jaecoo J5 compact and electrified Omoda C9 PHEV.
Both are set to appear at the brand’s upcoming roadshow-style Carnival in Desa ParkCity from Aug 21 to 24, giving Malaysians an early glimpse at what’s coming next.
The Jaecoo J5, which we previewed during the 2024 Omoda Jaecoo International User Summit, recently made its APAC debut at GIIAS 2025 in EV form. It’s positioned as the new entry point into the Jaecoo brand line-up.

Though it’s a B-segment SUV, the J5 punches above its weight with a premium design and features. Highlights also include a massive 13.2-inch portrait touchscreen, panoramic sunroof, powered seats, and a 480-litre boot.
For Malaysia, as a start, we can expect the J5 to sport a 1.6-litre turbocharged powertrain making 194 HP and 290 NM with a 7-speed DCT similar to what we saw in the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed.

This is the same setup found in the larger Jaecoo J7 but packaged into a smaller footprint. The J5 will compete directly with the Proton X50 and its own group sibling, the Chery Omoda 5.
The Omoda 5 instead leans into a sportier, coupe-inspired aesthetic while the J5 carries forward the rugged, squared-off SUV styling seen on the J7, appealing to a different type of buyer.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Omoda C9 PHEV is expected to arrive as the brand’s new electrified flagship. It builds on the petrol-powered version already on sale in Malaysia, which is offered in two variants, 2WD at RM168,800 and AWD at RM188,800.

Both ICE models feature a 2.0-litre turbo engine producing 261 HP and come equipped with a 24.6-inch curved display and advanced driver assistance features. The PHEV version goes even further. It pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with dual electric motors to deliver a combined 610 HP and 920 Nm.
Thanks to a 34.46 kWh LFP battery sourced from CATL, the C9 PHEV claims an EV range of up to 150 KM with a combined driving range of 1,100 KM and a consumption rate of 6.9 L/100 KM. It will also offer 70 kW DC and 6.6 kW AC charging.

That puts the C9 PHEV not just at the top of O&J Malaysia’s Omoda lineup, but also among the most powerful and longest-range PHEVs in its class, even ahead of the upcoming Jaecoo J8 PHEV which is expected to be a more luxurious and tech-laden offering.
In line with Chery Group’s global direction, the Omoda and Jaecoo brands now operate as one in Malaysia. This streamlining of retail and aftersales is already visible in showroom branding, marketing campaigns and shared model strategies.
With one model aimed at accessible urban mobility and the other at pushing boundaries in electrified performance, the Jaecoo J5 and Omoda C9 PHEV reflect two sides of the same coin and mark the next phase of growth for the O&J brand in Malaysia.
