JKR Set To Use Solar Lights In Over 1,000 Accident Hotspots
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi says more than 1,000 high-risk accident spots have been identified nationwide.
According to him, the Public Works Department (JKR) recently carried out a detailed inspection of federal roads, focusing on areas with sharp bends, road damage and poor lighting.
“We have identified over 1,000 accident-prone spots nationwide. These sites have various issues, including dangerous bends and poor visibility. To address this, we’ve installed more than 300 solar-powered streetlights along the East-West Highway (RTB), more will be placed at other accident-prone areas,” he said.
Nanta added that the ministry has applied for extra funds to speed up the installation of solar lighting at these high-risk locations to improve safety for all road users.
Nanta was speaking after launching the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry at the JKR Pengkalan Kubor Ferry Terminal. The event was attended by Narathiwat Deputy Governor Amirut Bua-On and Kelantan JKR director Nik Soh Yaacoub.
He said the new ferry service between Pengkalan Kubor in Kelantan and Takbai in southern Thailand is more than a means of transport. It connects border communities, facilitates trade, and strengthens cultural ties.
Built at a cost of RM7.9 Million, the Sri Tanjong 1 was completed on Feb 28 and handed over to JKR on March 11. It can carry 58 passengers, six crew members, eight light vehicles or a bus with 44 passengers.
Nanta said the new vessel’s larger capacity and modern facilities will improve safety, efficiency and convenience for cross-border travel while supporting the socio-economic activities of the area.
He also suggested the 34 years old retired ferry be preserved as a monument to honour its decades of service.
