Johor Lorry Operators Call For Delay In Speed Limiter Rollout
Johor lorry operators are urging the government to hold off enforcing speed limiter devices (SLD) on heavy vehicles, which is set to begin October 1.
Johor Trucking Association president Chai Pei Yoon said operators support safer roads but worry about unclear rules and rising costs.
“With the deadline so close, suppliers may struggle to bring in enough devices. On top of that, JPJ has yet to issue proper SOPs for installation, leaving operators at risk of being overcharged,” she said.
The SLD works by capping a vehicle’s maximum speed through its Electronic Control Unit (ECU).
While European trucks often come with certified devices, many Malaysian lorries, especially older Japanese models lack them, forcing owners to turn to uncertified third-party installers.
“Most of our fleet is over ten years old and still runs on traditional diesel systems. Installing SLDs without clear guidelines is not only costly but could also cause technical issues. We just need more time,” Chai added, suggesting enforcement be pushed to January 1.
The association has raised the matter with industry players and plans to seek a meeting with Transport Minister Anthony Loke soon.
Loke, however, previously stressed that SLD enforcement is crucial to curb fatal crashes involving buses and lorries. The rollout will be gradual, starting October 1 with checks on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 2015.
