Proton e.MAS 7 Remains Malaysia’s Top-Selling EV, CKD Starts Soon
The Proton e.MAS 7 continues to dominate Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) market, holding the top spot for the eighth straight month, buoyed by strong sales in Aug 2025 too.
In a press statement issued earlier today, the national automaker revealed that it has delivered 5,811 units of the e.MAS 7 thus far. Included here were 5,455 units shifted locally, followed by another 356 units exported to four overseas markets.
That former figure sees the e.MAS 7 take up a 24% share of the local EV market, which roughly equates to nearly one in four new EVs sold in Malaysia this year.
“We are sincerely grateful to all Proton e.MAS 7 owners for their trust and support. The Proton e.MAS 7 was built as a car for Malaysians, and we are always listening to customer feedback to make it better,” said PRO-NET CEO Zhang Qiang.
The exec was also pointing to July’s launch of the updated e.MAS 7 model, which brought over-the-air (OTA) updates plus fresh interior and exterior colour options. “Every milestone we achieve is because of your belief in us, and we remain committed to continuously improving the ownership experience,” adds Zhang.
Aug also marked the opening of Proton’s first dedicated EV plant in Tanjung Malim, a key step towards local assembly. Until now, the e.MAS 7 has been sold as a fully imported (CBU) offering from China, but production will soon shift to completely knocked-down (CKD) assembly, making it Proton’s first localised EV.
Said plant, located in the Automotive High Technology Valley, has an initial capacity of 20,000 vehicles a year, with room to scale up to 45,000. Proton adds this will help grow Malaysia’s EV supply chain, create skilled jobs and make EVs more accessible.
Moreover, the move also supports the government’s vision to position Tanjung Malim as the country’s EV hub, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim pushing for a competitively priced Proton EV ahead of the ASEAN Summit in Oct.
