Tesla to Roll Out V4 Superchargers in China, Open to All EVs

Tesla has announced plans to roll out its V4 Supercharger Cabinets in China starting in 2025. The V4 units offer ultra-fast charging of up to 500 kW and support both 400V and 1000V architectures, making them compatible with a wider range of EVs.

In a move to enhance accessibility, these chargers will be open to non-Tesla EVs. “This move will enhance charging efficiency and experience,” Tesla China shared on Weibo.

Tesla operates over 60,000 Superchargers globally, with 11,500 located in China as of November 2024. In Q4 2024 alone, Tesla installed 162 Superchargers at 51 sites across the country.

China remains a key market for Tesla, with its 5,000-square-meter Supercharger factory in Shanghai producing up to 10,000 V3 Superchargers annually. Tesla opened its charging network to other brands in China in April 2023, turning it into a significant revenue stream.

In Malaysia, Tesla’s Supercharger network is still exclusive to its vehicles. This decision likely reflects Malaysia’s smaller EV market. In November 2024, EVs accounted for just 2.5% of total vehicle sales, with Tesla being one of the top performers.

The relatively low EV adoption rate means charging networks in Malaysia are not yet highly profitable, especially with numerous charging point operators (CPO) fighting for a share of the space. Tesla appears focused on supporting its customer base first before opening its network.

Another factor is the exclusivity itself, which serves as a selling point for Tesla vehicles. Regulations will require Tesla to open 30% of its chargers—15 out of 50 units—by the end of 2025, giving the company time to align with market growth.

As EV adoption increases, Tesla will surely follow its global strategy of opening its charging network to non-Tesla users in Malaysia. For now, exclusivity remains a strategic advantage as the country’s EV ecosystem evolves.
