BYD Atto 8 Makes Global Debut, Malaysian Launch Possible?
-full_normal.jpg)
The BYD Tang L, the brand’s latest full-size flagship SUV, is gearing up for global markets under its new name, the BYD Atto 8.
In China, the Tang L sits at the top of BYD’s Dynasty series with prices ranging between RMB229,800 to RMB289,800 (RM136,000 to RM172,000). Since its launch in April 2025, the SUV has recorded over 30,000 units sold, a testament to its balance of power, efficiency, and high-tech sophistication.

In its global form, the Atto 8 will feature BYD’s advanced DM-p plug-in hybrid system, pairing a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with dual electric motors to deliver a combined output of 400 kW (536 hp). It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds, offering performance that rivals premium European SUVs while maintaining impressive efficiency.

Powering the hybrid setup is a 35.62 kWh LFP battery, good for up to 150 km of pure-electric range. Combined with its 60-litre fuel tank, the Atto 8 DM-p achieves a total range of over 1,000 km (CLTC), making it ideal for long-distance touring.

The Atto 8 measures 5,040 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,760 mm in height, with a 2,950 mm wheelbase that comfortably accommodates seven passengers. The model also supports DC fast charging up to 71 kW, allowing quick top-ups on the go.

An all-electric version of the Atto 8 is also planned, available in both single and dual motor configurations. The RWD variant produces 580 kW (777 hp), while the AWD version pushes output to 810 kW (1,086 hp), enabling a 3.9-sec 0–100 km/h sprint.

A 100.5 kWh LFP battery powers the EV version, offering between 560 and 670 km of range depending on configuration, positioning it as one of BYD’s most capable electric SUVs to date.
As for Malaysia, this development could be more relevant than it seems. With BYD committed to local CKD assembly, the brand’s ongoing product and vertical expansion points to a broader regional strategy, similar to what we’ve seen from the Chery Group.
-full_normal.jpg)
Since BYD Cars Malaysia already manages the Denza lineup while the Sime Group handles the core BYD brand, it’s reasonable to expect that the Atto 8, like the Seal 6, will eventually arrive here in right-hand-drive (RHD) form.
-full_normal.jpg)
If that happens, Malaysia could be among the first RHD markets in the region to receive the Atto 8. The question is whether this high-performance seven-seater SUV will resonate with local buyers, or if a more family-focused option like the BYD eMAX 9 luxury MPV might prove to be the smarter fit for Malaysian roads.
So what do you think, is Malaysia ready for a 1,000 hp electric SUV like the Atto 8, or would a luxury MPV make more sense?
