BYD, Chery Clear China’s Car Data Security Test
China’s latest automotive data security assessment has given the green pass to nine automakers and 43 of their models, including BYD and Chery. The evaluation confirms these cars meet national standards for how they collect, store, and handle personal and vehicle data.
The assessment focuses on five key areas, ensuring exterior camera footage cannot identify faces, processing cabin data internally, requiring users to opt in before any personal data is collected, providing clear notifications about how information is used, and keeping data collection within defined accuracy limits.

Alongside BYD and Chery, the other companies meeting all requirements are Changan, SAIC Group, BAIC NEV, GAC Aion, GAC Trumpchi, Changan Ford, and SGMW.
Some models don’t capture exterior facial data, so they were assessed based on the remaining four criteria. The report didn’t provide details on specific model names, production years, or sales figures.
This voluntary check ties back to China’s 2021 Regulation on the Management of Automobile Data Security and the national standard GB/T 41871‑2022, which set out detailed rules for how automakers and service providers should manage vehicle-generated data.

Passing the assessment shows these manufacturers are serious about protecting user privacy. Sensitive cabin data stays internal, exterior data is anonymised, and drivers have clear control over what information is collected, helping ensure connected cars are both smart and secure.
