BYD Lets EV Owners Share Home Chargers For Extra Cash
BYD is bringing an Airbnb-style twist to electric vehicle charging. The automaker’s new app feature lets EV owners share their home charging stations with other BYD drivers in the same neighborhood and even make a little extra cash while they’re at it.
If you own a home charger but are out for work or errands, your station would normally sit idle. Now, other drivers can book it through the app, agree on a charging time and price, and settle payments easily using BYD’s built-in card reader.
For owners, it’s a low-effort way to monetize an underused resource.

For drivers who don’t have a charger at home, this is a game-changer. They get convenient, nearby charging at cheaper rates than public fast-charging stations. Often without any transaction fees.
And since the system is all in the app, finding and booking a charger is super simple.
BYD isn’t alone. Nio and Xpeng have rolled out similar features. Xpeng, for example, lets charger owners set different electricity prices for peak and off-peak hours, and payments are handled automatically in the app.

BYD’s approach feels a bit more polished, thanks to the integrated card reader and seamless interface.
This whole idea is really about making the most of what’s already there. Instead of waiting for more public chargers to be built, BYD is tapping into existing residential chargers, turning idle equipment into a shared network.
It’s perfect for apartments, condos, schools, churches, or municipal buildings, places where chargers might sit unused for hours.

At the end of the day, it’s a win-win. Owners earn extra money, drivers get cheap, convenient charging, and EV brands like BYD, Xpeng, and Nio build stronger loyalty while promoting cleaner, smarter transportation.
