BMW is planning to launch 40 new or updated models by 2027, including the new iX3 Neue Klasse later this year.

While Mercedes-Benz’s plan to launch 21 models in the next two years seems ambitious, its German archrival BMW decided to one-up the Stuttgart-based marque by planning to launch at least 40 new or updated models by 2027. Yes, you read that right; that’s 40 cars in the next three years.

Announced by CEO Oliver Zipse during BMW Group’s annual conference for 2025, the 40 target models mentioned will be either new models or updates to its current cars, with all of them featuring various types of powertrains, including electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and even full combustion (ICE).

We’ve also been told that at least two of these will be from its new Neue Klasse EV family. The first of the many will be the previously teased, long-awaited next-gen BMW iX3, ready to make its global debut later in Sept this year at the upcoming IAA Mobility motor show in Munich, Germany. The all-electric SUV will be followed by the new i3 EV saloon, which will be the first all-electric 3 Series variant, if you exclude the G28-based i3 in China.

News of the 40 new models plan is followed by BMW Group’s presentation for its performance in 2024, which features some good and bad news for the Bavarian automaker. The good news is that the group’s EV sales in 2024 have risen by 13.5% compared to the previous year, with a total of 426,594 EVs sold across its three major brands, or one fifth of the group’s total sales.

The bad news, on the other hand, is that 2024 saw the group’s revenue fall by 8.4% to €142 billion (RM686 billion), while earnings before tax dropped significantly by 35.8% to €10.9 billion (RM52 billion) last year. The group quoted that the massive product recall on some of its key models last year, huge investments in R&D and expenditure, as well as declining sales in key markets like China, have all contributed to this fall.

With that being said, China remains BMW Group’s most lucrative market for EV sales, with more than 100,000 deliveries made in the People’s Republic last year. On top of that, its EV sales in the US have also hit an all-time high, with more than 50,000 units sold in 2024. The Americans were also the biggest buyers for BMW’s M and M Sport models last year, accounting for one in 10 BMWs sold in the country.

All in all, BMW Group as a whole has sold 2.45 million units in 2024, which is 4% less than what they achieved in the previous year. Of those, 2.2 million of them were BMWs, 245,000 were MINIs, and only 5,712 of them were Rolls-Royces. Moving forward, the group expects its total sales to rise slightly in 2025, with a planned reduction in capital expenditure set to help boost its cash flow.
