Rapid KL Denies Monopoly, Reassures Klang Valley Commuters
Rapid KL has fired back at claims that it dominates bus services in the Klang Valley, telling FMT that the public transport scene is far from a monopoly.
The company said besides its own operations, buses in the region are also run by Causeway Link, SKS Bus, Mare Liner, and Selangor Omnibus, all under the supervision of the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad).
According to Rapid KL, its expanded role on certain routes isn’t about pushing out competitors. Some corridors, like Selayang Prima, were handed over to Rapid KL at the request of regulators to prevent service disruptions after other operators withdrew due to financial pressure.

“These decisions were made purely in the public interest,” the company told FMT.
Competition and contracting models are nothing new in Malaysia’s bus industry. A 2015 network revamp aimed to streamline routes, regulate fares, and raise service standards, but rising costs and limited support caused several operators to pull out.
Rapid KL and Prasarana Malaysia Bhd said they continue to support gross-cost contracting models, similar to Singapore and London, linking operator performance to clear service benchmarks.

For commuters, the priority is reliability, frequency, and predictability. Rapid KL said operational improvements are already showing results. Since 2023, on-time departures from terminals have hit 90%, while a pilot program launched in Nov is testing ways to reduce long waits and bus bunching on selected routes.
The operator is also tackling congestion with dedicated bus lanes along Jalan Ampang, Jalan Genting Klang, and Jalan Klang Lama, which have already cut travel times by up to 18 minutes and boosted ridership significantly with14% on Jalan Ampang, 70% on Jalan Genting Klang, and 14% on Jalan Klang Lama.
Rapid KL said these measures show that prioritizing buses not only speeds up journeys but also improves passenger confidence.

Looking ahead, Rapid KL is focused on fleet maintenance, expanding first- and last-mile connectivity, and improving real-time info for passengers.
The company stressed that the long-term solution for Klang Valley buses isn’t about adding more operators but ensuring performance-based contracts, consistent service standards, and a financially sustainable bus ecosystem.
