UTM–Perodua Smart Mobility Campus Program

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has pre-launched its Smart Mobility Campus Program in strategic collaboration with national automaker Perodua, marking a key step towards smart, campus-based transportation solutions.
The programme was officiated by UTM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim at the UTM Kuala Lumpur campus, together with Associate Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Nurulakmar Abu Husain, Dean of the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT).
The Vice-Chancellor was briefed on the programme’s concept, progress and roadmap by the core project team led by Ts. Dr. Zulhasni Abdul Rahim, alongside Dr. Liyana Adilla Burhanuddin and software engineering student Mr. Rasheaduzzaman, who manages the project’s vehicle fleet.

Developed by UTM students, the Smart Mobility Campus mobile application enables real-time monitoring and remote control of smart vehicles deployed under the initiative, forming a key component of the UTM–Perodua collaboration.
The programme aims to improve student safety and mobility while offering hands-on exposure to startup development, application engineering and smart fleet management. It is designed to support safe and efficient travel between the campus and residential colleges.
During the session, three smart vehicle prototypes developed under Phase One were showcased. Equipped with IoT-based technologies and smart control systems, the vehicles were demonstrated live, highlighting real-time remote access and control through the student-built mobile application.

Subject to approval by Perodua’s management later this month, the project is expected to scale under Phase Two with the deployment of an additional 12 smart vehicles. Longer-term plans include expanding the model beyond UTM to other campuses nationwide.
Prof. Dr. Mohd Shafry praised the project team’s innovation and collaboration, and officially pre-launched the prototype phase. He said the initiative reflects UTM’s commitment to impactful academia–industry collaboration and aligns with the university’s tagline, “Innovating Sustainable Solutions.”
UTM views the Smart Mobility Campus Program as a potential benchmark for smart campus integration, youth entrepreneurship and sustainable transport, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI and UTM’s ASCEND 2030.
