MITI: Malaysia Poised as High-Value Auto Hub

Malaysia is steadily carving out a stronger role in high-value vehicle assembly and export-focused manufacturing, according to Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Sim Tze Tzin.
At the launch of the GWM Wey G9, Sim said the country’s well-established automotive supply chain, along with a skilled workforce, gives it an edge in supporting advanced vehicle production.

“Malaysia has over 640 specialised vendors and a talented technical workforce that manufacturers can really lean on,” he said.
He explained that local assembly isn’t just about making cars, it’s about building a stronger industrial base. By boosting economic complexity, involving more domestic vendors, and transferring technology, Malaysia is laying the groundwork for long-term growth under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030).

Sim also highlighted Malaysia’s global reach, thanks to 17 free trade agreements. “Cars assembled here can go to many countries duty-free, which is a huge advantage for manufacturers,” he added.

Looking ahead, he stressed that long-term industrial investment is key to making Malaysia a sustainable export hub, especially for right-hand-drive markets.
On the topic of new energy vehicles, including hybrids and full EVs, Sim said that building consumer trust will require solid safety standards and reliable after-sales service.
