Malaysia Considers New Incentives For Affordable EV Purchases

The Malaysian government is considering new incentives to make electric vehicles (EVs) more affordable, including targeted purchase assistance and support for home charging facilities.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the proposed measures aim to make EV ownership accessible to more Malaysians while addressing both vehicle prices and long-term ownership costs.

⚡ TL;DR

NEW INCENTIVES: Targeted EV purchase and charging assistance are being considered.

EXISTING BENEFIT: Up to RM2,500 in qualifying home EV charging income tax relief through YA 2027.

CURRENT STATUS: No new EV purchase rebate amount or eligibility criteria have been confirmed.

Government Eyes Targeted EV Purchase Incentives

According to a written parliamentary reply reported by Utusan Malaysia on Nov 3, Loke said the government is evaluating several measures, including incentives for affordable EV purchases, support for locally assembled models and expanded public charging infrastructure.

He stressed that any new incentives should be targeted at those who need them, strengthen Malaysia's domestic EV industry and help reduce overall transportation costs.

However, no new purchase rebate amount, eligibility criteria or implementation date has been announced.

Existing EV Tax Relief Remains Available

While new incentives are still under consideration, Malaysia already provides individual income tax relief of up to RM2,500 for qualifying home EV charging expenses until the Year of Assessment 2027, subject to the applicable tax rules.

The government also maintains tax incentives supporting locally assembled EVs.

Loke highlighted the previous MARiiCas electric motorcycle incentive, which offered rebates of up to RM2,400 to eligible individuals, as an example of targeted assistance.

These existing measures are separate from the newly considered incentives for affordable electric cars.

Will EVs Become Cheaper For Malaysian Buyers?

That remains uncertain. The government has not confirmed whether any future assistance would take the form of a direct purchase rebate, additional tax relief or another incentive mechanism.

For prospective EV buyers, the key consideration is whether the eventual measures will meaningfully reduce ownership costs, particularly for more affordable models.

Separately, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) previously proposed a RM7,000-RM10,000 personal income tax rebate for electrified vehicle buyers. As Carz previously reported, that remains an industry proposal rather than an approved government benefit.
