Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology

Mercedes-Benz’s highly anticipated and latest addition to its EQ portfolio, the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class Electric (N465), officially launched in Malaysia.

Known as the G 580 with EQ Technology, the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) off-roader (4x4 luxury SUV) underpins a Ladder Frame Construction (ladder-frame chassis).

Fully-imported (CBU – Austria), available via Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) are two variants (G 580 EQ – MYR 958,888, G 580 EQ Edition One – MYR 998,888).

Prices (OTR, w/o insurance, 10% SST) include a standard vehicle warranty (four years/unlimited mileage) and a drive battery warranty (10 years/250,000 KM).

Six (standard) exterior colours (G 580 EQ: Dark blue, Indium Grey, Iridium Silver, Mojave Silver, Obsidian Black, Opal White Bright).

The all-new G-Class Electric has an angular and a symmetrically tiered dashboard (Superior Line Interior – AMG Line Interior), linked to a high-rising centre console (touchpad, drive mode selector, vehicle telematics, wireless charger).

Circular and G-Class iconic, the darkened headlamps are framed with the grille’s surrounds. Installed are full LED (Multibeam LED) units.

Features are automatic On/Off/high-/low-beam, Daytime Running Lights (DRL – LED), Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus, welcome/leaving lights (animated), sequential turn signals (LED) and a light surround (grille).

Rectangular, the 3D darkened tail lamps are framed slim and are positioned at the bottom. Installed are full LED units.

Features are automatic On/Off, welcome/leaving lights (animated) and sequential turn signals (LED). Included is a high-mounted stop light (top-tailgate-integrated) and a set of fog lamps (bumper-integrated).

The side mirrors (single-tone – G 580 EQ: Obsidian Black/G 580 EQ Edition One: Matte Black) are electric-powered (auto-fold, adjust), with sequential turn signals (LED), blind-spot indicators (Blind Spot Assist – BSA), automatic-dimming/heating (Mirror Package) and ground light projection (G 580 EQ Edition One: ‘G-STRONGER THAN TIME’ logo).

Mounted are ventilated-cross-drilled (front, rear) disc brakes, featuring coloured callipers (G 580 EQ: Silver-‘Mercedes-Benz’ lettering – G 580 EQ Edition One: Blue-‘Mercedes-Benz’ lettering).

Drive is aided by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold system.

The all-new G-Class Electric features the following sets of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Grouped are Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC (ADAD), Active Brake Assist (ABA), Active Steering Assist (ASS), Active Lane Keeping Assist (ALKA), Blind Spot Assist (BSA), Exit Warning Function (EWF), Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus (AHBAP), PARKTRONIC Parking Assist (PPA), Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC (APA-P), Parking Package (360-degree camera, transparent bonnet), Technology Package and Assistant Package.

Included is the MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment system, featuring two 11.6-Inch screens (rear: front seatback-mounted) with a 7.0-Inch MBUX tablet and two headsets (wireless).

Features are three display styles (OFF-ROAD, SPORTY/PURE EV, DISCREET), multiple interfaces (drive modes, vehicle settings), three modes (NAVIGATION, ASSISTANCE, SERVICE) and sound personalisation (drive sounds: G-Roar).

The system supports MBUX Interior Assistant (front, rear – voice/gesture/steering controls), MBUX AR-Navigation, MBUX Navigation Premium, Live Traffic Information, Mercedes-me Services, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto (wireless) and fingerprint scanner (MBUX custom drive settings).

Entertainment is channelled via a Burmester 3D surround sound system (760 W – 18 speakers).

The all-new G-Class Electric harbours an all-electric powertrain (BEV).

Fused in its electric drivetrain (eATS) is a quad-motor-transmission-integrated (individually-controlled) setup (front-rear-axle-mounted: Permanently-Excited Synchronous Motors – PESM). 

Each e-motor generates 108 KW (145 HP). Total system output reads at 432 KW (580 HP) and 1,164 NM.

Integrated to each e-motor is a two-speed automatic transmission (total: eight gear ratios).

Power is transmitted (dual-joint shafts) to all four wheels (individually), via an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system.

Incorporated are torque vectoring, virtual locking differentials, and G-Turn (720-degree spin) and G-Steering (90-degree turn) drive systems.

Juicing-up the e-motors is a Lithium-Ion (Nickel Manganese Cobalt – NMC) battery pack (396 V, 216 cells, 12 cell modules, 116 KWH), enabling 434 KM to 473 KM of driving range (WLTP).

Charging via AC (Type 2 – 11 KW), takes 12 hours for a 10% to 100% State of Charge (SoC). Charging via DC (CCS2 – 200 KW) takes 32 minutes for a 10% to 80% SoC.

Included is a charging cable (5 M – wallbox, public charging station).

The 4x4 luxury e-SUV is comfortably spacious, safe and suitable for both daily-driving and off-roading outings. Ride quality is firm and well-balanced, delivering high-power density, high efficiency and high-power reliability.

Good sound insulation with the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects accounted for. The build is acoustically designed to enhance the in-car ambience.

Part of the aero-acoustic measures used is the installation of acoustic laminated glass (heat-/noise-insulating, infrared-reflecting – Acoustic Comfort Package), electric drivetrain/body shell encapsulation (front, rear – rubber mounts/acoustic foams) and underbody panelling.

Overall, the cabin can suppress unwanted noises well and make them barely noticeable, in most of the day-to-day driving environment.
