Smart #3

Long-awaited, the latest and second addition to the Smart family, the all-new Smart #3, officially launched in Malaysia.

A fully-electric B-segment SUV (compact crossover), it is built on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) EV platform, designed by Mercedes-Benz and locally-distributed by Proton New Technology (PRO-NET).

Fully-imported (CBU - China), three variants are available (Pro - MYR 175,000, Premium - MYR 215,000, Brabus - MYR 255,000). 

Prices (OTR, w/o insurance) cover, high-voltage battery warranty (eight years/200,000 KM), high-voltage component warranty (eight years/150,000 KM), vehicle warranty (four years, unlimited-mileage) and spare parts warranty (two years, unlimited-mileage).

Also included (complimentary), roadside service assistance (24/7), SmartCharge home charger (two years warranty), Accessories Package (six items), Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) adaptor (two years warranty) and internet data (five years, 60 GB)

The all-new Smart #3 parades a modern cockpit, featuring a T-shaped dashboard, linked to a high-rising and flatly-cascading centre console (gear/buttons deleted, chiller).

Outfitted in leather and hard-touch panels, it sees variant-specific interior schemes (Pro, Premium - Infinite Black, Infinite Grey, Vibrant Brown/Brabus - Brabus Black).

Accentuating the outlook are metallised trimmings, Red accents (Brabus), and a 64-colour ambient light system (Pro - simple/Premium, Brabus - extended).

Centre-staged are the screen setups (instrument cluster, infotainment), and filling-up the space are turbine-designed air-conditioning vents and aluminium sport pedals (Brabus).

Overall, the build is well-designed. Very driver- and passenger-oriented with accessibilities strategically-arranged.  

Installed is a 9.2-Inch fully-digital instrument cluster, accompanied by a 10-Inch fully-coloured Heads-Up Display (HUD) (Premium, Brabus).

Interior of the five-seater sees upholsteries in leatherette (Pro), leather (Premium), and Microfiber-suede with Red accents (Brabus).

Variant-specific colour schemes (Pro, Premium - Infinite Black, Infinite Grey, Vibrant Brown/Brabus - Brabus Black).

The front gets electric-powered seats (10-way, lumbar, driver-side memory), with driver courtesy function (auto-adjust - ingress/egress), passenger touch screen adjustment (seat position), and heating/ventilation.

The rear gets a bench seat (60:40 split-fold-slide, recline). Included are armrests (front centre console - chiller storage, rear centre seat - fold-out), Smart/Brabus logo headrests (Pro, Premium/Brabus), and Red seat belts (Brabus).

Complementing the environment is a panoramic halo roof (heat protected) with sunblind (pull-out), and White/Alcantara Black headliner (Pro, Premium/Brabus).

Borderline bulbous, it offers ample interior mobility, providing generous cabin space. Sufficient head-, shoulder-, and leg-room.

Mounted is a three-spoke-flat-bottom sport steering wheel, wrapped in PU leather (Pro), leather (Premium), and Alcantara (Brabus).

Black finished, the accentuations are in Silver trimmings and illuminated Smart/Brabus logo (bottom - Pro, Premium/Brabus).

Features are multi-switches (Bluetooth, media, vehicle settings) and column adjustments (tilt, telescopic). Drive is aided by an Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system.

Numerous storage areas. E.g., centre console caverned/partitioned spaces, under-stowage and armrest chiller, a large-sized glove box, and seat back/side door pockets.

Provided are four cup holders (two - front, two - rear), and four bottle holders (one - side doors).

Equipped with multiple charging outlets. E.g., four USB ports (two - front, two - rear), two 12 V sockets (one - front, one - boot) and one wireless charger (front).

Also included is a 3.3 KW Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) function. 

Accessing its powered-tailgate (contactless - key fob, kick-sensor - Premium, Brabus), opens up to 370-Litres (seats up) and 1,160-Litres (seats folded) of load capacities.

Also provided is a front trunk (frunk - 15-Litres). 

Weighing in at 1,780 KG (Pro), 1,810 KG (Premium) and 1,910 KG (Brabus), the all-new Smart #3 stands at 4,400 MM long, 1,844 MM wide, 1,556 MM tall, and with a wheelbase spanning 2,785 MM.

A sleek and sporty silhouette, it exudes an all-around rounded exterior, with smoothly- and cleanly-sculpted surfaces.

The front-end sees a seamlessly-merged bonnet/bumper/fenders and an A-shaped grille (illuminated - Premium, Brabus, Active Grille Shutters - AGS) with corner-flanked intakes.

Variant Brabus adds on the Brabus Package (vented bonnet, Gloss Black Smart bonnet script, Brabus emblems).

Accentuating the layout are Black trimmings (grille surround/inserts, bumper clad, side skirts, fenders, side mirrors) with Red accents (Brabus).

Shaped curvaceously-rounded, it parades a coupe-esque design (dipping roofline - coupe fastback), with a horizontally-symmetrical waistline.

The rear-end sees a roof-edge spoiler (short - Pro, Premium/elongated - Brabus), a bulbous tailgate and roundly-muscular quarter panels.

Variant Brabus adds on the Brabus Package (Brabus aero-spoiler, Gloss Black Smart tailgate script, Brabus emblems).

Accentuating the layout are Black trimmings (spoiler, bumper clad, rear lip, side skirts, fenders, side mirrors) with Red accents (Brabus).

Linked by a bar trim (Grey), the headlamps are framed in a sharply-rounded design. 

Installed are CyberSparks LED/CyberSparks-Matrix LED units (Pro/Premium, Brabus), with LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL). 

Variant Pro features automatic On/Off/high-beam, manual levelling, and Follow-Me-Home function.

Variant Premium and Brabus feature automatic On/Off, Adaptive High Beam Assist (AHA), automatic levelling, LED sequential turn signals and follow-me-home/welcome light function.

Akin to Merc’s EQ SUVs, the tail lamps are in a full-width and slim light bar design. 

Installed are LED units with LED sequential turn signals (Premium, Brabus) and follow-me-home/welcome light function (Premium, Brabus).

The side mirrors (Black) are electronic-powered (auto-fold, adjust). 

Features are LED sequential turn signals (Premium, Brabus), blind spot-indicators (Blind Spot Detection - BSD - Premium, Brabus), automatic-dimming, memory, reverse-dipping and heating functions, and courtesy lights (Premium, Brabus).

Fitted are ventilated (front) and solid (rear) disc brakes. Variant Brabus comes with painted (Red) brake callipers. 

Drive is aided by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold, and a brake energy recovery system (regeneration).

Variant Pro rides on a set of 19-Inch ‘Flux’ dual-tone (Black-Silver) alloy rims, wrapped in 245/45 R19 (front, rear) Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 060 tyres.

Variant Premium cruises on a set of 19-Inch ‘Torque’ dual-tone (Black-Silver) alloy rims, wrapped in 245/45 R19 (front, rear) Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 060 tyres.

Variant Brabus surges on a set of 20-Inch ‘Synchro’ dual-tone (Black-Silver) alloy rims, wrapped in 245/40 R20 (front, rear) Continental EcoContact 6 Q tyres.

The all-new Smart #3 features the following set of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Standard are Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop/Go, Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB) with City/Urban/Pedestrian/Cyclist Detection, Front Collision Mitigation Support (FCMS), Rear Collision Mitigation Support (RCMS), Emergency Lane Keep Assist (ELKA), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Automated Lane Change Assist (ALCA), Evasive Manoeuvre Assist (EMA), Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Speed limited information function (SLIF), Driver Performance Monitoring (DPM), Highway Assist (HWA), Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), 360 Visual Park Assist.

Passive safety comprises seven airbags (driver-passenger, driver knee, front side, front-rear curtain), seat belts (reminders, pretensioners, anchors), ISOFIX (two-outer-rear - top tether), Door Opening Warning (DOW) (Brabus), Electric Parking Brake with Auto Brake Hold (EPB), parking cameras (reverse, 360-degree), parking sensors (12 - front, rear), blind-spot indicators, auto-dimming rear-view mirrors (interior, exterior), privacy glass (front/rear side windows, rear windshield), impact beams (side, front), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with digital display, Hello Smart app (vehicle status monitoring, vehicle locate/tracking), and anti-theft (notification, immobiliser).

Entertainment is channelled via a standard five-speaker setup (Pro), and a 13-speaker (640 W) Beats by Dre high-end sound system with two sound modes, Classic and Beats (Premium, Brabus).

The all-new Smart #3 harbours two variant-specific powertrains. 

Variant Pro and Premium nestles a single (rear-mounted) electric motor (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor - PMSM), generating 200 KW (268 HP) and 343 NM.

Variant Brabus fuses two (front-/rear-mounted) electric motors (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor - PMSM), producing 315 KW (422 HP) and 543 NM.

Mated to the setups is a single-speed automatic transmission.

Variant Pro and Premium incorporate a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) system, while variant Brabus sees an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 KM/H is done in 5.8 seconds (Pro, Premium) and 3.7 seconds (Brabus). Top speed is 180 KM/H (Pro, Premium, Brabus). 

Juicing-up the e-motors are 49 KWH Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) (Pro) and 66 KWH Lithium-Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) (Premium, Brabus) batteries. 

Total driving range (WLTP) is 325 KM (Pro), 455 KM (Premium), and 415 KM (Brabus).

Variant Pro comes with a 7.5 KW AC charger, enabling a 10% to 80% State of Charge (SoC) in six hours. 

Variants Premium and Brabus adopt a 22 KW AC charger, enabling a 10% to 80% SoC in three hours.

Standard (Pro, Premium, Brabus) is a 150 KW DC charger, enabling a 10% to 80% SoC in 22 minutes (Pro) and 29 minutes (Premium, Brabus).

Also included is a 3.3 KW Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) function.

The build is very well-equipped, offering a high level of NVH comfort (Noise, Vibration, Harshness). 

Overall, the cabin is able to suppress unwanted noises well and make them barely noticeable, in most of the day-to-day driving environment.

The all-new Smart #3 exudes an all-around sophisticated and sporty outlook. Its smooth and seamless silhouette is simply electrifying.

Stepping inside is like stepping into the future, with its high-tech cockpit design and the overall premium-crafted cabin.

Ultimately, the build quality is excellent, and with its enticing price range, Smart’s all-new e-coupe-SUV is a bargain, especially with all the bells and whistles it has.
