Anthony Loke: 3 Minute LRT Interval & Full Operational System By June 2023
In a media press conference today, YB Anthony Loke addressed a few issues pertaining to the rail services under the purview of Prasarana.
LRT Kelana Jaya line currently is serviced by 38 sets of LRT trains which results in the five minute service interval. This is due to the fact that 18 more trains are still in various stages of maintenance. He however assured the public that all 56 trains will be fully operational by the third quarter of 2023.
He further added that Prasarana has been instructed to speed up the maintenance work to have at least 48 trains running in order to achieve the targeted 3-minute interval schedule. Prasarana has also acquired 19 new trains to service the Kelana Jaya LRT route which will start delivering in August 2023.
Prasarana, according to Loke, would also carry out major maintenance work on its LRT system which includes power generators;he does on to agree that the service is still not stable with back to back disruptions. However, the management has been instructed to have in place back-up plans and SOPs in place to lessen future disruptions. This is in view of the last massive five day Kelana Jaya LRT line closure which affected commuters badly. An independent report on that is under-way and will be made public when it's available.
Based on his personal spot-checks a couple of days back where facilities in the LRT and monorail stations are not up to par, Loke added that the ministry is in the stages of awarding the contract for the replacement of 16 elevators in monorail station this coming February.
Other than that, Prasarana has also ordered 192 handrail units and 22 step chain units to facilitate repair works on 46 of the 706 escalators. They have also taken into account about 600 light bulbs which require changing and 17 roof leakage to be addressed immediately.
Moving beyond that, Loke has also instructed its division in the Transport Ministry to work with other ministerial departments such as DBKL, MPSJ and others to ensure there is a proper continuity to facility maintenance, upkeep and development to achieve a more comprehensive public transport ecosystem.
Loke said he had also instructed the management of the Land Division of the Transport Ministry to expand the scope of the committee for all public transport facilities in the Klang Valley for a more comprehensive public transport ecosystem.
The final matter address was with regards to the all important first and last mile transport. According to Loke, Prasarana will further look into this matter and engage other parties including the e-hailing operators in order to make public transportation more feasible to the masses. A cost implication study will be carried out by Prasarana on this matter.
