BMW Vision Neue Klasse X Unveiled – New Concept Previews Future SUV Designs
Revealed today is the new BMW Vision Neue Klasse X concept EV SUV.
Following an online leak that went viral earlier today, the new BMW Vision Neue Klasse X concept has been revealed in full by the Bavarian marque. This is a direct preview of the brand’s next generation EV SUV offerings, namely things like the BMW iX3, that’s set to enter production in 2025.
This is the second concept from BMW’s Vision Neue Klasse concept series, the first being a sedan version that debuted last year. Though still a concept, BMW i design chief Karl Langer stresses that the upcoming production version won’t stray too far from this concept in terms of looks.
BMW i design chief Karl Langer says the production-bound version will not differ greatly in looks from this new concept revealed today.
Effectively, the Neue Klasse X concept is giving us an early previous of the next-gen BMW iX3 that's set to enter production next year (2025).
Speaking of its design, the biggest talking point here is of course is the signature ‘kidney grille’ it proudly bears up front, specifically at how ‘modest’ it is in size compared to BMW’s current and latest efforts – i.e. XM, iX, and X7.
Langer adds that the Neue Klasse X concept’s narrow and tall grille will be an exclusive signature of upcoming BMW X-series models – both ICE and EVs. Aptly, future BMW sedans will instead feature variations of the full-width kidney grilles as seen in the Neue Klasse sedan.
One of the biggest talking points of the Neue Klasse X is its 'modest' grille size, and BMW says all future SUV models - both ICE and EV - will adopt this look.
The down-sized grille is perhaps good news for some who aren't fond of BMW's latest and current massive grille design seen in the likes of the X7, iX, and XM.
Despite coming in later than the sedan concept mentioned, which is set to morph into the next-generation 3 Series, this X-badged crossover SUV will enter production first. All core BMW models are set to take both styling and technological cues from these Neue Klasse concepts.
Regarding tech, BMW hasn’t confirmed the type of drivetrain or range figures for the Neue Klasse X. BMW instead confirmed that it will adopt the sixth-generation eDrive tech, promising a 30% improvement in range and similar gains in charging speed.
Tech specs remain undetermined, but BMW confirmed the Neue Klasse X harnesses its latest sixth-gen eDrive tech, which promises 30% imrpovement in range.
The latter fact is boosted by the adoption of round battery cells that are more energy-dense, which will also form the SUV’s 800-volt architecture for rapid charging capability. Through this concept, BMW also sheds light on how BMW’s new range of EVs will be controlled.
Much of which sems from the new chassis and drive units primed in this concept, which is said to offer superior driving experience tailored to users’ individual needs. Central to which are four new control units – each being high-end supercomputers in their own right – developed in-house.
On board, the cabin shows that future BMW SUVs are set to see the BMW Panoramic Vision and Central Display modules take centre stage in place of the traditional BMW iDrive interface.
As for the cabin, one significant omission here is the familiar BMW iDrive, and this latest creation more or less confirms BMW’s move to ditch said tech. in its stead now are steering-mounted buttons that interact with the BMW Panoramic Vision and Central Display modules.
The Panoramic Vision in this concept has taken a step further too as it now projects information at a height perfectly matched to the driver across the entire width of the windscreen. In driving situations, the BMW 3D Head-Up Display displays information such as assisted driving or traffic guidance.
Notable too is the presence of a dedicated control in the steering wheel that adjusts how the Neue Klasse X sounds. It can be adjusted on the fly and, effectively, supplies artificial driving noises that are pumped into the cabin.
Notable too is the increased incorporation of sustainable new plant-based materials with much of the cabin's build.
As for the rest of the cabin, it’s worth noting its incorporation of sustainable new plant-based materials in its build. There’s also plenty of recycled marine plastics used to build the cabin trims too, with discarded fishing nets making up 30% of the interior’s total plastic content.
What do you folks reckon then? Are you digging how the Neue Klasse X looks? As usual, share your take in the comments below, as well as our social media pages…
